The Grass Is Always Greener With Hoover

Pumping Technology That Supports Landscape Health And Appearance

Florida’s sandy soil, long growing season and unpredictable weather complicate any effort to maintain a healthy and vibrant landscape. Doubly so if the landscape you’re trying to maintain features large turf lawns or a significant number of non-native plant species.

The erratic nature of our current climate will only exacerbate this challenge; putting pressure on Florida’s dwindling resources and increasing the likelihood of adverse weather events like hurricanes and/or long-running droughts.

In Search of a Greener Alternative

The University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences  (UF/IFAS) notes that a great many homeowners are now opting to replant ornamental green spaces – replacing traditional turf grasses with “Florida friendly” alternatives that are better suited to our rapidly-changing climate.

But if you work for a commercial enterprise like a golf course, ball park or master planned community for example, you don’t have that luxury. For you, the ability to maintain aesthetically-pleasing green spaces is a necessity. The continued success of your project depends on it, and that’s a real challenge.

One answer is to irrigate indiscriminately – flooding your landscape with large volumes of water in the hope that you can preserve its appeal - without working to improve the efficiency of your efforts.

But this is both wasteful and costly: It damages root systems, erodes soil, puts strain on your infrastructure, inflates your utility bills and significantly increases the cost of maintaining your pump station.

As an approach, it's simply not sustainable and we know that Florida projects need a sustainable, long-lasting and dependable solution to their irrigation challenges.

To protect your landscape and your budget, you need to work with a team that knows what they’re doing. That’s a team capable of setting you up with the right pump station(s) and controllers – and the irrigation managers capable of using them effectively.

  • Reduce Expenditure

There’s no such thing as a silver bullet, but doing things properly can and will save you hundreds of thousands of dollars over the lifespan of your project.

Our approach focuses on minimizing landscape and equipment repair bills by providing you with the tools and experience needed to ensure that you stay within your water budget – and maximize the lifespan of your infrastructure.

  • Protect Your Landscape

A combination of industry-leading design and cutting-edge technology ensures that your landscape always gets the water it needs to flourish.

Having spent the last 40 years supporting residential and commercial projects in Florida, we’re well aware of the costs associated with landscape repair or replacement – and focus on delivering unparalleled reliability to all customers.

  • Conserve Critical Resources

It often feels like the need to protect your landscape conflicts with the desire to safeguard Florida’s natural resources. But experience tells us that doesn't have to be the case.

The intelligent application of water; at the right time, and in the amounts needed to encourage healthy root growth without washing nutrients out of your soil, will automatically conserve water vs. a shotgun approach to irrigation. Out technology is built with this in mind.

We've Proven There’s a Better Way

Taking the time to understand the specifics of a given landscape enables you to design an irrigation system that can cope with the high humidity, unpredictable weather, fluctuating water tables, storms and droughts that characterize our local climate.

Leveraging smart technologies like Hoover Flowguard or our fully-integrated irrigation controllers lets you take things a step further – ensuring that irrigation water is always applied as needed, and highlighting flow or pressure related problems before they spiral out of control.

But the truth is that your irrigation system is only part of the puzzle. To guarantee plant health and protect your landscape, you really do have to know how to manage all of this technology correctly; from the clocks through to the telemetry data about pump cycle patterns and hourly water use.

Simply put, the world’s most advanced irrigation system can’t support your project on its own. You also need a certain amount of institutional knowledge and expertise to keep things running smoothly.

That’s why we also help our customers find hands-on help from Hoover-approved professionals who understand the value of doing things properly – and possess the expertise required to ensure that your infrastructure is utilized properly.

Class-Leading Technology Meets Unparalleled Customer Service

The three-part model described above is the Hoover formula for landscape health. As we see it, long-term success is only possible when you put the right tools in the right hands – and empower people to safeguard the health of their landscape.

That’s not to say that every Hoover client works with us to find an irrigation manager. Nor does it mean that every customer is using our clocks or the support we offer. But it does mean that we see our best results when we work hand-in-hand to ensure that our customers are set up for long term success.

Speaking plainly, we know that our continued success depends on our ability to support projects in perpetuity.

That's why we focus on forging long-term relationships with every Hoover customer; working with them to ensure they have access to the knowledge, equipment and expertise needed to give their landscape a fighting chance.

At the end of the day, it's our customers who foot the bill when something goes wrong with their irrigation. With Flowguard, we have the power to safeguard their investment.

A Typical Florida Residential Development Before And After Hoover’s Involvement

These before and after images show what's possible when you put the right tools in the hands of an experienced irrigation manager. On the left hand side, above and below, we see an aerial view of the community. The turf is clearly under stress (much lighter in color) compared to the same view below it, taken after the new irrigation system was installed.

But more dramatically, the images above and below, of the same location, demonstrate this transformation more clearly. The darker green areas on the lower image show healthy turf, with the lighter green on the upper image revealing turf that's patchy, unhealthy and clearly in a state of stress.

Supporting an Irrigation Consultancy That Prioritizes Landscape Health

Insight Irrigation is an irrigation consulting and contracting company that provides irrigation management, design, construction and permitting services to clients across the state of Florida. Using Hoover Flowguard, the team at Insight have the information needed to ensure no problem goes undetected or ignored. Their landscaping management expertise, teamed with Hoover technology means they save their clients tens of thousands of gallons of water every day – and a fair amount of dollars too.

In this study, Insight Irrigation started using Flowguard correctly for their client, and not only improved the health and appearance of their landscaping,  they reduced water use by almost 20% in the 12 months following.

Changing The Paradigm

We spend a lot of time talking to Florida’s HOA committee members, developers, golf course superintendents and irrigation consultants. They tell us they're facing a multitude of never-ending challenges. But we know it doesn't have to be this way.

More often than not, they're struggling with constant outages and spiraling repair bills, equipment failures and landscape damage – stemming from an inability to access the right tools and/or some element of mismanagement.

It’s not that we don’t recognize these problems: We know they exist, but we also know that they’re entirely avoidable and shouldn’t be repetitive problems.

If you take the time to understand the peculiarities of your location - by accounting for variables like the way that shading, sun position, precipitation and temperature variations will affect different parts of your field at different times of the year…

If you start out with a system that’s up to the job and work from the assumption that you should be able to get 100% uptime from your pump station and clocks…

If you work from the expectation that you should be able to see real-time data about the performance of your station - charted so that you can see exactly how well your system is functioning at any given moment - and that you’ll have access to a team capable of interpreting and using that data, the idea that your irrigation system wouldn’t be able to nourish your landscape becomes inconceivable.

That’s Hoover’s world, and we're inviting you to be part of that world. Focus on working with our team and you'll get the system - and the support - that’s right for your landscape, and you’ll quickly see that maintaining healthy and vibrant green spaces doesn’t need to be a headache.

Work with us to get up to speed with Flowguard or let us connect you with an irrigation manager who knows their stuff and you’ll see that your irrigation system can be a trusted and reliable asset – instead of an unaffordable expense.

Building the Right Foundation

The foundation of a flourishing landscape begins with a well-thought-out irrigation system.

We could bore you by drilling into the minutiae, and talking about the way we modify our pump station designs to accommodate the peculiarities of your local water table, your microclimate, or the soil you’re working with.

All of that is important, but what really matters is the fact that we’ve developed pump station technologies that work properly and deliver for decades.

Simply put, we’ve mastered the basics – and know how to provide infrastructure that’s capable of nourishing your landscape and preserving the aesthetic appeal of your project.

We then build on these basics by including intelligent pump station management software and hands-on support that’s designed to ensure that our systems always operate at peak efficiency.

It’s not rocket science, but the careful application of a well-honed process ensures that we deliver time after time, without wasting your time or resources.

Nurturing Your Landscape

The key to a thriving landscape is reliable irrigation. To ensure that every Hoover system delivers, we use a combination of smart technology and hands-on support to keep your system delivering as designed.

At the core of every Hoover project is Flowguard, our own intelligent irrigation management software. Flowguard monitors pump station performance around the clock; charting water use, flow rates and pressure, logging pump activity and flagging any unusual activity so that everybody involved in your project has full visibility of any potential problems.

When used in conjunction with hands-on support from our technicians and experts, Flowguard ensures that we can spot problems before they take your system offline, and tweak your setup to ensure maximum efficiency. In our eyes, that’s the key to sustainable landscape health.

In a community with a lot of landscaping, you need reliability. If you lose several hundred acres of plants and trees, that’ll cost millions of dollars. Fortunately all the claims Hoover make about the quality of their pumps are true.

For over a decade, this development's completely inadequate irrigation was a costly burden on the community's purse. They were stuck in a perpetual break/fix cycle.

Crucially, the system has Hoover Flowguard installed allowing the new pump station to be managed remotely 24/7, 365 days a year. The landscaping remains consistently healthy and unstressed and most importantly, residents are happy.

The Truth About Landscape Health

We’re not irrigation consultants. Nor are we landscape managers, but you don’t work in irrigation for over 40 years without picking up the ability to spot and diagnose a lot of common problems.

You might think we spend a lot of time looking at parched or under-watered lawns, and we do. But the truth is that a great many of the landscapes we see look fairly green at first glance.

Instead, the common problems we encounter are things like pests and disease, dollar weed infestations, fungal infections, malnourishment and stresses on plant health caused by mismanagement and over watering.

Some of these problems need hands-on repairs from a qualified landscaper, but all too often, they’re actually symptomatic of an irrigation system that hasn’t been managed to meet the specific needs of the landscape, and in our eyes, that’s a cardinal sin.

We work incredibly hard to ensure that you have the tools needed to water regularly without flooding your soil and washing vital nutrients into drains, streams or lakes. We also work hard to connect you with the experts required to use those tools effectively.

Partnering with us is the most sensible way to ensure that you’re safeguarding the health and appearance of your landscape  – not because we can wave a magic wand and guarantee you instant results, but because we believe in doing things properly.

Put plainly, working with us means that you’ll always have dedicated professionals fighting your cause; working hard to design or tweak irrigation systems so they remain capable of supporting landscape health and minimizing both your environmental impact and ongoing landscape/equipment maintenance fees.
